Mx Laura
Laura A. Jacobs LCSW-R (she/they/he/none), is a trans and genderqueer-identified psychotherapist, speaker, author, and activist specializing in transgender, nonbinary, LGBTQIA+, BDSM/kink, consensual nonmonogamy, sex work, and sexual/gender diversity individuals broadly. Laura’s most recent book, Surviving Transphobia, was released September 21, 2023 and just won the 2025 APA’s Society for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity’s Distinguished Book Award!
They have also provided several hundred educational lectures and workshops, and served as the first transgender Chair of the Board for any Community Health Center in the USA. Laura has also been presented the 2019 Standard of Excellence Award by AASECT, the American Association for Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists. Laura is a prolific speaker in the media, at medical and mental health conferences, in medical schools, and for other organizations, having been featured in the New York Times, NPR, MSNBC, NBCNewsOnline, SiriusXM, CBSNews, Mic.com, TEDx, and more. They are a member of the Kink Clinical Guidelines Workgroup, a coalition which developed the first best practices document or the mental health care of those who are interested and/or involved in kink, BDSM, and/or fetish eroticism.
Laura is also a lifelong kinkster, and currently identifies as an unowned lesbian submissive/slave who can occasionally switch. As Lawrence Jacobs, he worked in the arts as a musician, composer, and photographer, as well as in less glamorous positions such as corporate middle management.
